Life Is A Journey Of Spirit – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Consciously realize that you are on a spiritual journey from the moment you draw breath to the last breath you draw. Acknowledging this fact of existence can make your life easier in many ways. All human lives contain good moments, bad moments and even truly ugly moments.  You are an eternal spirit having a human experience.  If you can hold this Truth closely and allow it to guide your actions and translate your experiences, you will save yourself much suffering.

“In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.” ~ Buddha

We suffer when we judge. It is easy to react negatively to some situation that happens “to” us that we judge as being undesirable or ‘bad’. Bad experiences can teach us our greatest lessons. Our pain gets our attention. It may make us notice the depth of our heart,  the spiritual side of our persona or some other ‘wake up’ realization. It gives pause so that we may come to know that we are much more than the person we see in the mirror. Each ‘bad’ experience includes an option to take responsibility for how we proceed. It teaches us some lesson which we had never truly incorporated into our Being. What we do from that point forward is the true measure of our growth.

Neglect, abuse, tragedy, disappointment, pain, illness and other ‘bad’ experiences may come into our lives when we are children. Some of us don’t truly suffer until we are older. One thing is for sure;  everyone’s life will eventually present great challenges. It’s part of the package deal of being human in a world of duality.  Sometimes we cause our own challenges; sometimes another persons wrong action causes our challenge; and sometimes challenges appear from undefined origin. Challenges can hold us in the grip of blackness until we have grown tired enough of our suffering to light the candle in our heart and walk forward with its warm glow lighting our path, unencumbered by the weight of our experience and forever wiser. Remaining in anger, resentment, blame or hate scorches the earth of the garden of your life and prevents the growth of beauty, joy and love.

If you are unable to understand why something ‘bad’ happened to you, try to keep things in perspective. Beyond glimpses of other times and other places, you are meant to have conscious awareness of only one life at a time. The span of a human life is a relative speck in the annals of all time. Perhaps that ‘bad’ experience was necessary for you to clear your slate, even an old score, transmute some collective karmic debt, show you your strength, show you your path, deliver a lesson, or any one of a thousand other possible scenarios. Only you can glean the gold from your personal challenges.

If ‘it’ happened, have faith that it served great purpose even if you are not clear on what the purpose could be. You will come to understand at some point. As the saying goes, if you never understand, the lesson was for someone else.

One other gift that ‘bad’ or ‘ugly’ experiences inherently contain is that they enable us to truly see, feel and appreciate the good and the beautiful moments of our life. If we never experienced the bad or ugly, would we ever truly notice the good? Would we learn to choose wisely? Choice is our constant companion in this realm. The more we learn, the better our choices. The better our choices, the better our lives and the better the world around us.

Yes, we are humans. It is easy to limit our perception to the human realm. It is only when we learn to embrace our own multifaceted nature of being both human and eternal spirit that we are able to embrace the full scope of our power and dance where angels fear to tread.

Love greatly, live gently, muster your graces and dance.
